Tropical Storm Isaac continues to dump rain on Louisiana

As slow-moving Tropical Storm Isaac moves away from New Orleans, surrounding areas of Louisiana are expected to see almost 2 feet of rain and more dangerous floods by the end of the week, while seven tornadoes have spun off from Isaac in Mississippi and Alabama so far.

A tornado that touched down in Gulfport, Miss., has caused the most damage, where significant destruction to homes has been reported. Carlos Redmond, a spokesman for Harrison County Emergency Management, said it's assessing the damage.

"We're looking for daylight. That's what we're looking for. We'll be able to tell a lot more at that time," Redmond told ABC News Thursday.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said tornadoes are possible along the central Gulf Coast region and parts of the lower Mississippi Valley through Thursday.

The rising waters from rain and flooding have already left locals scrambling up to attics and onto roofs. The main parishes that pose the greatest concern sit around Lake Pontchartrain. With another 4 to 7 inches of rain expected, many officials have expressed worry about the rising waters.

Officials in LaPlace, La., about 25 miles northwest of New Orleans, in St. John the Baptist Parish, called the situation dire.

"I'm afraid the tide is really going to catch some of us off guard tonight," Parish President Layton Ricks told ABC News late Wednesday night.

3100 people have been evacuated in the town since 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to a National Guard officer, with more than 1,000 waiting for rescue in LaPlace as the city sees its worst flooding in 40 years. Housing developments, such as the River Forest subdivision where dozens of families were rescued Wednesday, are under 5 feet of water. The Louisiana National Guard said it would be out in force Thursday across the St. John the Baptist Parish, assisting in rescue efforts.

"It's our own little Katrina," said Tania Trege, wife of St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Trege, describing the situation in Laplace.

Towns southwest of New Orleans have already received about 20 inches of rain, with another 4 to 7 inches possible. New Orleans International Airport has officially received 10 inches of rain so far.

As of 5 a.m. ET, Isaac was about 55 miles southeast of Alexandria, La., and about 110 miles northwest of New Orleans. Tropical storms winds extend outward up to 175 miles. Isaac's maximum sustained winds are at 45 mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

A tropical storm warning was still in effect from Cameron, La., to the Mississippi-Alabama state border, according to the Hurricane Center.

An unofficial rainfall total of 22.5 inches was reported in Arabi, La., near the city's 9th Ward on Wednesday. An official report from Audubon Park in New Orleans listed 17 inches of rainfall.

Livingston Parish officials told ABC News that they felt the worst of Isaac at 10 p.m. Wednesday, and expect flooding in the low-lying parts of the parish. Rescue efforts were under way and officials said this will be the first overnight of many water rescues in the area.

Rescue operations are still under way in Plaquemines Parish, where more than 100 people in the parish have been rescued so far. A levee in Plaquemines Parish will be intentionally breached at some point Thursday to relieve pressure on it. That area has been under mandatory evacuation.

One person has been reported dead, according to The Associated Press, compared with 1,800 deaths from Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi. And police reported few problems with looting.

More than 725,000 homes and businesses throughout Louisiana were without power as of 2 a.m.

In Mississippi, Highway 90 remains shut down, with much of area now submerged in water. 30,000 customers are without power in Gulfport, Miss., alone, where an apparent tornado spawned by the storm ripped a house from ground.

In Biloxi, powerful winds are ravaging the city as residents begin to worry about raw sewage and mold.

President Obama declared federal emergencies in Louisiana and Mississippi late Wednesday, according to a statement from the White House. The disaster declarations free up federal aid for affected areas.

Of Louisiana's 64 parishes, 58 are under states of emergency this morning.

Forecasters expected Isaac to move inland over the next several days, dumping rain on drought-stricken states across the nation's midsection before finally breaking up over the weekend. The storm was expected to weaken to a tropical depression Thursday, according to the Hurricane Center.

Five to 10-foot storm surges were expected in Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana, with seven to 14 inches of rain, and some areas could see 25 inches, the center said.

ABC News' Max Golembo and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Pentagon threatens legal action over bin Laden book ? The Express ...

The letter, addres?sed to Mark Owen identi?fied two separa?te non-disclo?sure agreem?ents he signed with the Navy.

The letter, addressed to Mark Owen identified two separate non-disclosure agreements he signed with the Navy. PHOTO: FILE

WASHINGTON:?The Pentagon warned on Thursday that it was considering legal action against a former US Navy SEAL for material breach of non-disclosure agreements with his first-hand account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. ????

In a letter obtained by Reuters, and subsequently released by the Pentagon, the Pentagon?s top attorney said the Department of Defense was also considering legal action against anyone ?acting in concert? with the author. It hinted that the book?s royalties might be subject to government claims.

The letter, addressed to ?Mark Owen,? the pseudonym under which the book was written, identified two separate non-disclosure agreements he signed with the Navy that legally committed him to never divulge classified information, which is a crime.

?You are in material breach and violation of the non-disclosure agreements you signed,? said the letter by Jeh Johnson, the Pentagon?s General Counsel.

?The Department of Defense is considering pursuing against you, and all those acting in concert with you, all remedies legally available to us in light of this situation.?

The author may have hoped to publish the book anonymously but his identity as Matt Bissonnette was quickly revealed and confirmed independently by Reuters. It was unclear how many others the Pentagon may consider legally culpable, given the broad language in Johnson?s letter.

A spokeswoman at publisher Dutton, which is an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Not vetted

US officials have said they were surprised by his book, No Easy Day, which was not vetted by government agencies before its publication to ensure that no secrets were revealed.

The letter noted that, under the terms of the non-disclosure agreements, the author had agreed to submit any manuscript for pre-publication security review and to obtain permission before publishing it.

The Pentagon pointed out that the disclosure of classified information was a crime and suggested that, under the terms of the non-disclosure agreement he signed, the US government could be entitled to all ?royalties, remunerations, and emoluments? from such a disclosure.

The letter did not say what classified information the book revealed but the book says an unarmed bin Laden was looking out from his bedroom door when he was shot in the head during the May 2011 raid on his hide-out in Pakistan.

The book has received widespread media coverage and the Pentagon letter noted that some copies have already been released, ahead of the book?s formal release next week.

?Further public dissemination of your book will aggravate your breach and violation of your agreements,? the letter warned.

Earlier this week, the author said in a statement from his publisher that the book was written ?with respect for my fellow service members while adhering to my strict desire not to disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way.?

But many in the special operations community have privately expressed disappointment in recent days over the book and the publicity it has received.

The author now faces threats against his life. An official al Qaeda website last week posted a photograph and the real name of the former Navy commando, calling him ?the dog who murdered the martyr Sheikh Osama bin Laden.?

As Mitt Romney's convention closes, the buzz in Germany is about Paul Ryan

The Republican focus, of course, was the official nomination of Mitt Romney for president. But Germany appears more interested in his choice of running mate.

After the last balloon fell at the Republican convention in Tampa, Fla., last night, German media delivered their verdict on the now-official Romney-Ryan ticket. Despite the fact that the convention focused on the crowning of Mitt Romney, it was really his sidekick, Paul Ryan, that grabbed German attention.

As Mr. Romney has been campaigning for years to get his shot at the White House, he is a well-known name in Germany. His big acceptance speech, however, still hit the news, given that he is the one challenging President Obama, who is still highly popular overseas.

The Munich based Sueddeutsche Zeitung gave Romney credit for a solid speech, but summed up its take with its headline: "Romney wants to take America back to the past." The weekly Die Zeit was less polite, wondering in its online election blog: "who the hell has written that speech for Romney?" It gave him only 5 out of 10 possible points for his performance.

But much of the comment was about Ryan. Germany is still trying to figure out who that 42-year-old politician with the college boy look is ? and what influence he would have in a potential Romney administration.

The daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung stated what many thought: that Paul Ryan is a far better speaker than Romney. Spiegel Online comments in its editorial that Ryan is "more dangerous than Sarah Palin" because his ideas would be a declaration of war on America's social welfare. The Hamburg-based online publication showed concern that Ryan could lead the Republican party more to the right for years to come, even if team Romney-Ryan fails at winning the White House.

'Ryan is the real king'

The business paper Handelsblatt made an even stronger statement, suggesting that once in the White House, the Romney/Ryan administration could become more of a "Ryan/Romney presidency." The Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel drew a similar conclusion, saying that Ryan could become the next president in 2016 if Obama wins over Romney: "Ryan is the real king."

Concerns about Ryan's ideas aside, he is regarded as a smart politician and is given credit for at least having a plan for solving the economic crisis (even if it's not well received) ? which German commentators so far don't see in the Romney campaign.

Tips on Long Distance Relationships ? Zoosklog ? The Romantic ...

August 29, 2012 at 3:20 pm Juliette T.

by Huw Richardson

Near and far are concepts the heart seems to ignore. Literature and history are filled with long-distance relationships: the letters of Abelard and Heloise and the letters of John and Abigail Adams contain deep wisdom and love, and also humor and candid pain. What is the Anthony/Cleopatra/Caesar triad if not a long-distance relationship gone horribly bad? What else is Ulysses? marriage to Penelope? Fiddler on the Roof has one of the daughters falling in love with her tutor, despite his exile to Siberia. The Internet has provided new meaning to ?Long Distance Relationship? both in the the sense of definition (what do we mean by ?Relationship??) and in the sense of tools and content (what makes a relationship work). We can video chat, text and sext to our hearts? content now. What would Cleopatra have made of Facebook? Would Perchik have tweeted his love to Hodel?

Presenting yourself online in an emotionally available way can result in that flush of new love that we are all looking for. But what happens when your Mister or Miss Awesome is far away? What can we learn about long-distance relationships to make the time-space factor easier to deal with? Is there anything that such a relationship can teach those of us not willing to take such a risk?

By way of presenting my bone fides, my last two relationships have been long distance. For two and a half years while living in San Francisco I dated a man from Seattle. Later, for more than three years, I dated a man from Hamilton, Ontario. For the first year I was in North Carolina, but I moved to Buffalo, NY, in order to be closer. Of course, even though we were less than one hour apart by car, there was an international border to cross any time we wanted to cuddle!

After six years of doing this, I?d be willing to do it again (although I don?t need to, thankfully!) because of the things I?ve learned by going through the process. These same points are valuable for ?local? relationships as well as Long Distance Relationships (LDRs)

1) Communication! Communication! Communication!
Humans are remarkable animals: our physical and mental structure is patterned in such a way that we can communicate beyond mere words via posture, tone, and even pheromones and other body functions. Communication in long distance is largely relegated to text-only, and so it is important that all parties in a LDR verbally communicate as much as possible all the things that are usually contained in subtext. Since your location is divided, your communication must be extreme.

The most important thing that I?ve learned as a writer: humor, especially sarcasm and irony, fail miserably on-line. Attempting to communicate in a ?sassy? way will blow up in your face. Trying to ironically understate the importance of something will result in your partner thinking it?s not important. Words online have to be 100% literal. Unless you?re an amazing writer of romance, please: Don?t do it. Full Stop.

The second most important thing I?ve learned is: everything is important. During the first relationship, the SF-STL one, we flew back and forth each month, taking turns. Sometimes we managed to see each other for two weekends in the same month! We saw each other so often that we forgot to communicate in the day-to-day. Things that needed to be said were always held off until the next time we saw each other. The result was emotional time bombs that usually exploded moments after one or the other of us stepped out of the Alaska Air terminal, most often on the drive home.

Remember to say things when they are important to be said even in text. Don?t store up all that emotional energy for the next time you see each other.

2) Virtualize! Virtualize! Virtualize!
This builds on the last item and leads to the next. There are some times when you and your new love can not be together. But there is no reason not to try! Communication on the internet has been busted wide open by the use of smartphones and mobile technology. When I started dating the man in Seattle, about the only thing you could do on the net was IRC Chat (which is where we met). Now there?s video chat and unlimited data/calling plans to keep you in touch. The New York Times Magazine calls this ?Ambient Intimacy?. Regular relationships have this build in by physical proximity. Those of us in LDRs need to make our own with tech.

Zoosk lets you communicate with each other via text or video chat. This makes chatting easier and can enhance your intimacy during those times that you are apart from each other.

When I was dating the Canadian he got a phone number from Google Voice that was local to me in North Carolina. The service was (and is) free and it forwarded to his Canadian Cell phone and let me talk to him whenever I wanted. His own calling plan let him call the States so we were never fall apart. My Google Voice account now allows me text him directly from my computer for free!

Skype facilitates international calling at discount rates, but also allows for video chat. One friend of mine calls the Family in Poland (for free!) as often as she can to show live pictures of her child growing up. I used to use the service for ?geek dates?: we?d send each other YouTube links and watch videos together as we surfed the net from our desks.

3) Bilocation! Bilocation! Bilocation!

Unless there has been a clear and open agreement, you?re not setting up shop in one place. You have to set up shop in two places for this relationship to work.

Hamilton, Ontario, became my second home. More people in Hamilton knew who I was than in Buffalo! I would walk up James Street North, for the monthly Art Crawl and be waived at from shop windows, get hugs on the street, etc. My partner worked just as hard to know people in Buffalo, although with less success ? mostly because of Population Density in the American Rust Belt, but also because people in Hamilton are so durned friendly!

Using Zoosk?s Romantic Social Network you can build a profile for the two of you that you share with your friends in both locations. You can post pictures, share comments about eateries in either location, and let the friends in one place know about what happened last weekend when you were out of town. And, of course, you can share your personal events with your friends in both places. If you link it up with Facebook and Twitter, even when you go on vacation you can make posts that all your circles can share.

You need to move easily between two worlds. The stereotyped image is ?I have a drawer in my partner?s bedroom.? But the reality you need two lives: it?s a huge pain to only have a change of clothes for a long weekend ? better to have several in the house! Shoes need to live in two places. We constantly read each others local news or local blogs. I knew I?d ?Made It? in Hamilton when I heard my name on a Canadian podcast!

In a ?regular? relationship this has obvious analogues: your circles of friend may never integrate; they may never even meet until your engagement party. But you and your partner need to move easily in both worlds and in the third world that you are creating together.

4. For the rest of you?

Clearly LDRs are special cases, but they underscore the weakness and strengths of ?regular? relationships too. Communication is the key in all cases. A friend of mine, a clergy person, told a couple, ?You never have to lie to each other, ever.? This holds true in LDRs and in other types of relationships. There?s a desire to only put your best foot forward, but the reality is that all the rest of you is going to show up sooner or later ? and all the rest of your intended as well! Don?t use your online time to hide that as it will only break you up in the end.

And here?s the last thing I learned: both of my Long-Distance Relationships ended because of a change in my life that I failed to communicate successfully. In both cases, I downplayed the change, I even covered it over a little. But ultimately I had to be honest and it was that that caused the breakup to happen.

When you are not living in close proximity with the person you are dating (or, sometimes, when you are) it is possible to hide the parts of your life that might make the other party uncomfortable. These can be small parts (pets, family) or huge (religion, health, eating habits, etc). When you meet the prospective love of your life online, you need to bring your entire self to the table, online already creates a filter, don?t hinder the process by holding back anything that may be important to the relationship.

New DNA method tracks fish and whales in seawater

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Danish researchers at University of Copenhagen lead the way for future monitoring of marine biodiversity and resources by using DNA traces in seawater samples to keep track of fish and whales in the oceans. A half litre of seawater can contain evidence of local fish and whale faunas and combat traditional fishing methods. Their results are now published in the international scientific journal PLOS ONE.

"The new DNA-method means that we can keep better track of life beneath the surface of the oceans around the world, and better monitor and protect ocean biodiversity and resources," says PhD student Philip Francis Thomsen from the Centre for GeoGenetics, Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen.

Marine ecosystems worldwide are under threat with many fish species and populations suffering from human over-exploitation, which greatly impacts global biodiversity, economy and human health. Today, marine fish are largely surveyed using selective and invasive methods mostly limited to commercial species, and restricted to areas with favourable conditions.

However, researchers at Centre for GeoGenetics now lead the way for future monitoring of marine biodiversity. They have shown that seawater contains DNA from animals such as fish and whales. The species leave behind a trace of DNA that reveals their presence in the ocean based on water samples of just half a litre.

From freshwater to seawater

The development of the novel DNA monitoring approach was accomplished by PhD student Philip Francis Thomsen and Master's student Jos Kielgast from the Centre for GeoGenetics headed by Professor Eske Willerslev. In December last year, they showed that small freshwater samples contain DNA from several different threatened animals, and after having published these results they began to focus on seawater. Here it also proved possible to obtain DNA directly from the water, which originated from local species living in the area.

"We analysed seawater samples specifically for fish DNA and we were very surprised when the results started to show up on the screen. We ended up with DNA from 15 different fish species in water samples of just a half litre. We found DNA from both small and large fish, as well as both common species and rare guests. Cod, herring, eel, plaice, pilchard and many more have all left a DNA trace in the seawater," says Philip Francis Thomsen.

In the other study the researchers showed that it is also possible to obtain DNA from harbour porpoise in small water samples taken in the sea, so the approach is not only limited to fish, but can also track large marine mammals.

A new and efficient method

The study also compares the new DNA method with existing methods traditionally used for monitoring fish such as trawl and pots. Here, the DNA method proved as good as or mostly better than existing methods. Moreover, the DNA method has a big advantage that it can be performed virtually anywhere without impacting the local habitat -- it just requires a sample of water. Associate Professor and fish expert Peter Rask M?ller from the National History Museum of Denmark, who also participated in the study, is optimistic.

"The new DNA method has very interesting perspectives for monitoring marine fish. We always keep our eyes open for new methods to describe marine fish biodiversity in an efficient and standardised way. Here, I look very much forward to follow the DNA method in the future, and I think it could be very useful to employ in oceans around the world," says Peter Rask M?ller.

The researchers also see great perspectives in the method for estimating fish stocks in the future.

The iPad might have the bulk of the tablet mind share, but the Nexus 7 has Google.com. The $199 tablet is now advertised on Google?s homepage with an attention-getting animation. It?s hard to miss the tablet on Google.com as it bounces up and eventually rests under a tag line of ?The playground is open. The new $199 tablet from Google.?

And as one of the top pages on the Internet, this ad spot will likely move quite a few tablets.

The Nexus 7 sold like gangbusters from the first day it was available. The 16GB quickly sold out. And that was with very little advertising as the first commercial came weeks later (shown below). But now the Nexus 7 is enjoying a bit of time in Daddy?s front yard.

Now that Google is advertising the N7 on Google.com, their supply must finally be at acceptable levels. The tablet is also slowly launching in new markets; it hit France, Germany and Spain yesterday. It?s probably a safe bet that Google is ramping up for a huge advertising push to fight against the all-but-official Apple iPad mini, said to launch in the coming months.

How to disable Java on everything ? Computer Chips & Hardware ...

java logo

Every once in awhile a security exploit comes along that gives you cause to be a little more careful than usual when on the computer. Recently a Java zero-day exploit was discovered that has the potential to, among other things, slave your computer to a botnet. The vulnerability will no doubt be fixed soon, but in the mean time you should take the necessary precautions. The easiest thing you can do in this situation is to just disable the Java plugin on your browser. Any and every browser is possibly vulnerable, so we put together a list of how to do this on each of the major browsers.

Disable Firefox

Internet Explorer 9

For modern versions of Microsoft?s Internet Explorer, all you will need to do is click on the gear icon just under the X in the top right and select Internet Options from the menu that will appear. The window that pops up will have seven tabs across the top. Look for the Programs tab to the far right of the page. The second option on the page that will appear includes a button that says Manage add-ons. Clicking this will open a third window listing all of the add-ons you currently have.

Scroll down in this list until you see Java(tm) Plug-In. You will likely see it listed twice. Next to the name it will list the Status. If the status is Disabled, you don?t need to do anything. If the Status is enabled, click the add-on. A new field will appear below that prompts you to disable the plugin. Click Disable for each of the Java add-ons and close all of the Internet Explorer windows.

Disable Java

Safari

There are no current examples of this exploit targeting OS X, but it would be possible for it to do so. To disable Java on Safari click the settings icon on the top panel of Safari to pop up the Settings menu. From the row of icons that appear across the top, select the padlock icon labeled Security. Under the Web content settings, make sure that Enable Java is unchecked. If the box is already unchecked, you don?t need to do anything else. If the box needs to be unchecked, restart Safari after you uncheck the box.

Disable Java

Firefox

Click on the Home icon at the top right of Firefox to be taken to the main Firefox menu. At the bottom of this page you will see the Settings icon. Clicking this will pop open the Options menu. At the bottom of the General Options you will see Manage Add-ons. Click this to pop open the add-ons menu. Click the Plugins tab on the left hand side to be shown all of the current and active plugins. Scroll down this list until you see the Java(TM) Platform SE 7 U4 plugin. Click Disable to stop this plugin, and if it is already disabled than close this window.

Disable Java

Chrome

From anywhere in chrome click on the URL bar at the top and type in chrome://settings/content and press Enter. Chrome will take you straight to the content settings for the browser. scroll down until you find Plug-ins. From here you can choose Click to play, Block all, or Disable individual plug-ins. Any of these three would be acceptable solutions, but for the sake of completion let?s click on Deisable individual plug-ins.

Locate the Java plugin from the list and make sure the add-on is disabled. If it is already disabled, close this tab and continue browsing. If you have to disable the add-on, restart Chrome entirely.

Over the next few days, whenever this vulnerability is resolved, your browser will notify you of an update that will fix this issue. In some cases, while we wait for a fix, some browsers may take measures to keep you protected. Read every pop up or warning that comes from your browser until this vulnerability has been fixed. Keep your browser as up to date as possible, and if you use antivirus software make sure you are running it regularly.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? With the Republican National Convention at last in full-throated roar, nominee Mitt Romney and his team reached out Wednesday to connect with critical voting groups ? veterans, Hispanics and women ? while gleefully mocking the man he is out to defeat in November.

Romney himself was ducking out of his own convention in Tampa to address the American Legion Convention in Indianapolis. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a top Hispanic voice in the GOP, made the round of morning talk shows to defend the GOP nominee's policies. And Ann Romney and Janna Ryan, the wife of Romney's running mate, teamed up to headline a "Women for Romney" event.

His nomination now official, Romney was free at last to start dipping into his general-election pot of campaign cash.

"We're excited that now he's going to be able to spend money, both in English and in Spanish, to explain to people how his policies will help grow the economy, help small business, help people have the confidence to invest in the future," Rubio said on "CBS This Morning."

To ensure the cash keeps rolling in, Ann Romney emailed supporters a fundraising appeal that echoed her Tuesday night speech to the convention.

"This man will not fail," she promised in the plea.

The main draw Wednesday night is vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman and author of a tough budget that remakes the way the government spends money. A poll by the Pew Research Center and The Washington Post found Americans deeply divided about Ryan, whom they described as conservative, intelligent, fake, phony.

President Barack Obama, for his part, was courting another key voting group ? young voters ? with a second day of campaigning in college towns. He had hoped to speak on the University of Virginia campus, but the school rejected that idea, saying it would disrupt classes on the second day of the semester. He'll speak in an off-campus pavilion instead.

The politics played out as Hurricane Isaac blew ashore on the Gulf Coast, casting uncertainty into a convention that scrubbed the first day of events out of fear it would swipe Tampa. Any scenes of destruction along the Gulf Coast were sure to temper the celebratory tone, and further compression of the schedule was possible if the storm proved disastrous.

The latest economic news suggested weak growth in the second half of the year, fodder for Republicans who blame Obama for the sluggish recovery. The U.S. economy grew at a tepid 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, the government reported Wednesday, a bit better than expected due to slightly stronger consumer spending and greater exports.

The GOP's outreach effort went into full gear after Ann Romney offered convention delegates ? and a national TV audience ? a soft-sided portrayal of the Republican candidate in her convention address. Her appearance was paired with a parade of gleeful Obama-bashers as the GOP seized its moment after days of worry about the hurricane.

Beyond Ryan, Wednesday's lineup includes 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Romney speaks Thursday night to bring down the curtain-closing balloons. Obama's Democratic National Convention follows next week in Charlotte, N.C.

Rubio held out Ryan as a "serious policy thinker" who's "going to have a bunch of new fans across this country" after he speaks.

The Obama campaign, in turn, released an online video targeting Ryan as a politician from a "bygone era" whose views threaten Medicare and would gut funding for Planned Parenthood.

Rice, warming up for her speech, said the voice of the United States in world affairs "has been muted" under this president, creating a chaotic and dangerous security environment. She spoke on "CBS This Morning."

Opinion polls, however, show Obama getting high marks on national security after ending the war in Iraq, drawing down the conflict in Afghanistan and ordering the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

The convention's keynote speaker, the unpredictable New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, issued a broad indictment of Democrats on Tuesday as "disciples of yesterday's politics" who "whistle a happy tune" while taking the country off a fiscal cliff.

"It's time to end this era of absentee leadership in the Oval Office and send real leaders to the White House," he said. "Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to hear to put us back on the path to growth and create good-paying, private-sector jobs again in America."

Romney made his debut at the convention two days before his own speech, rousing the crowd into cheers as he took the stage briefly to share a kiss with his wife after she spoke. Ann Romney's prime-time speech was in large measure an outreach to female voters as she declared her husband "will not let us down" if elected president.

Her tone was intimate as she spoke about the struggles of working families: "If you listen carefully, you'll hear the women sighing a little bit more than the men. It's how it is, isn't it? It's the moms who always have to work a little harder, to make everything right."

Obama's allies did their best to counter Romney and the Republicans.

In her own effort to woo female voters, first lady Michelle Obama traveled to New York to promote her healthy-living initiatives while visiting "The Dr. Oz Show" and Rachael Ray's talk show. The programs will air next month, closer to the election.

Mrs. Obama also was making a guest appearance on Wednesday's "Late Show with David Letterman."

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, dismissing GOP attempts to woo Hispanic voters, said: "You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate." He added, "This is a party with a platform that calls for the self-deportation of 11 million people."

Hispanics strongly favor Obama, according to public polls, and Romney and his party have been seeking to win a bigger share of their votes by emphasizing proposals to fix the economy rather than ease their positions on immigration.

Polls find the economy is overwhelmingly the dominant issue in the race and voters narrowly favor Romney to handle it. In an AP-GfK poll taken Aug. 16-20, some 48 percent of registered voters said they trust Romney more on economic issues, to 44 percent for Obama. However, a Washington Post-ABC News in the days immediately before the convention found that 61 percent of registered voters said Obama was more likable, while 27 percent said Romney.

Military punishes 6 soldiers for Quran burning

?

By Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube, NBC News

Updated at 6:54 p.m. ET: WASHINGTON - The U.S. military on Monday dealt out punishment to six Army soldiers for burning Qurans at Bagram Air Base that ignited deadly protest in Afghanistan, and to three Marines for their roles in urinating on Taliban corpses.

?

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com?

The Army handed out administrative discipline to four officers and two non-commissioned officers for the Quran burning but?found no ill intent on the part of the soldiers so none will face criminal charges. ?

The administrative punishment, however, will likely result in the end of their military careers.

The investigation against one sailor was dropped when it was determined he was simply ordered to drive the truck with the material to the burn site at the base.

The burning of the Muslim holy books in February sparked weeks of protests that led to 30 Afghan deaths. U.S. officials said at the time the books were mistakenly sent along with garbage for disposal after detainees had written messages in them.

The investigation found up to 100 Qurans and other religious materials were burned in the incinerator at Bagram Air Field on Feb. 20.?

An Army report released on the incident Monday shed new light on what happened that day.

Report: 5 soldiers involved in Quran burning

Members of the Military Police and Theater Intelligence Team had discovered that Bagram detainees were using library books to pass notes and messages. One?interpreter determined that 60 percent to 75 percent of the books contained extremist content. So, soldiers were ordered to remove the books as contraband. In all, about 2,000 books, including Qurans and other religious material, were set to be destroyed.?

An Afghan National Army soldier and and interpreter warned the troops not to dispose of the religious texts, but soldiers took some 100 books to the burn pit anyway.

A local man who worked at the burn pit discovered the Qurans and other texts were burning. He grabbed a front-end loader and doused the entire burn pit to extinguish the flames.

An?angry crowd of Afghans gathered around the U.S. service members who drove the truck to the burn pit and were burning the material. The U.S. soldiers all fled.

"I absolutely reject any suggestion that those involved acted with any malicious intent to disrespect the Quran or defame the faith of Islam," an investigator wrote. "Ultimately, this was a tragic incident (that) resulted from a lack of cross-talk between leaders and commanders, a lack of senior involvement in giving clear guidance in a complex operation? and??distrust among our service members and our partners.? ?

In the other case, a statement from the Marine Corps said the three Marines received the punishment for "violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for their role in the desecration and filming of deceased Taliban that became public in January 2012."

As part of a plea deal, three Marines pleaded guilty and will receive a permanent mark on their records that will impact any future promotions and re-enlistments.

Six more Marines are still awaiting their punishments in the urination incident, which was recorded on video. It was announced, however, that two officers will be charged with creating a command climate that led to acts of bad behavior, the Marine Corps said.?It was unclear what disciplinary action the four other non-commissioned officers will face.

The three Marines were all members of the Third Battalion, Second Marine Regiment or in units that were attached to the "3/2" during their deployment. Their names were not released.?

One non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to having violated a general order by?wrongfully posing for an unofficial photograph with human casualties and urinating on the body of a deceased Taliban soldier, which conduct was prejudicial to good order and discipline.

Another non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to?wrongfully posing for an unofficial photograph with human casualties and?wrongfully video recording the incident.?

A staff non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to?failing to report the mistreatment of human casualties by other Marines and?making a false official statement to a Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigator about the his knowledge of the video.

The incident took place during a counter-insurgency operation near Sandala, Musa Qala District in Helmand Province, Afghanistan around July 27, 2011.?

According to The Wall Street Journal, officials in Afghanistan were bracing for public demonstrations over what might be viewed as lenient punishment of the troops.

No Decision On Property Tax ? Noonan ? 98FM: Dublin's Best Music ...

The Finance Minister Michael Noonan is insisting that the details of a new property tax have not been decided upon.

It follows reports over the weekend that the Troika has been told how the Government plans to assess properties based on their value.

Speaking in Limerick earlier however, Mr. Noonan said nothing has been finalised yet and the finer details will be made known in due course.

He said the only things that are certain are the facts that the tax will be introduced next year and it will be collected by the Revenue Commissioner.

Meanwhile,?Fianna F?il has hit out at the plans to introduce the controversial tax by saying there?is no point in implementing a property tax which people cannot afford to pay.

Fianna F?il?s finance spokesperson Michael McGrath says people?s inability to pay must be taken into account.

?Are they really going to expect the 130,000 families in mortgage arrears to pay a property tax? Are they going to expect people in negative equity to pay a property tax?

?I think that the key issue is the ability to pay and at this point in time, given where the country is at and the very real difficulties people are facing, I genuinely do not believe there is an ability to pay ?400 or ?500 in many cases.?

Ann Romney gets Secret Service protection

BOSTON - Ann Romney has been given her own Secret Service detail, ABC News has learned.

Ann Romney, the wife of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was first assigned a detail late Friday afternoon, a campaign aide confirmed.

She was first spotted by pool reporters riding in a two-car motorcade near her family's lakeside home in Wolfeboro, N.H., on Sunday morning.

ABC News was the first to report that Romney was to receive Secret Service protection back in January.

The United States Secret Service did not immediately respond to requests for comments on Mrs. Romney's new detail, but sources say it is typical for the wife of a presidential candidate to receive their own details around the time of the convention.

The Republican National Convention is set to begin on Tuesday, after being delayed by a day due to incoming Tropical Storm Isaac.

Mystery, Romance and Franchising: Culverhouse Professor Co ...

August 27th, 2012 - Filed under: Cover Story

Illustration by Doug Shinholster and Erin Hill

By Kerie Kerstetter

University of Alabama professor James Combs took everything he knew about?college textbooks and threw it out the?window when he agreed to co-author a graphic novel on franchising last year.

Published in June 2011, ?Tales of Garc?n: The Franchise Players? is one of?the most current textbooks on the subject?of franchising and family business, yet its gripping story line and illustrations resemble that of a comic book. Combs, a professor of management and marketing in the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration, is pioneering a new approach to learning about business through his work with the graphic novel literature.

?The whole idea is that if you?re engaged, you?re paying attention to what you?re reading,? Combs said. ?It?s great when you can put education and entertainment together.?

The book is about a charismatic hotel owner named Garc?n, who has a knack for entertaining guests with his stories of adventure. His family business has seen limited growth, yet a possible solution emerges when a mysterious investor offers to become the hotel?s first franchisee. Garc?n has two children, Ram?n and Isabel, who help run the family business, and they each have different ideas about whether the hotel should be franchised.

?The book really looks at how to best grow your business without losing that personal service aspect,? Combs said.

The authors describe the plot as one of mystery, romance and adventure, as the family explores the options of franchising.

Combs collaborated with Dave Ketchen (Auburn University) and Jeremy Short (University of Oklahoma), both professors of management and veterans of the graphic novel genre. Ketchen and Short authored the two-part, graphic-novel series ?Atlas Black in 2010? that focused on the subject of business management. The three met through their doctoral study at LSU, where Combs and Short were each students of Ketchen?s.

?We were all chatting at dinner one night when they said, ?Why don?t we do a book on franchising??? Combs said about the origins of ?Tales of Garc?n.?

Short said the relevance of franchising in today?s business, as well as Comb?s expertise on the subject, made him a logical partner for their next graphic novel.

?Franchising is an important form of entrepreneurship in the U.S. and worldwide,? Short said. ?Jim is an expert in the area of franchising research, so he was a natural fit to be part of the project.?

Short and Ketchen were the storytellers, responsible for generating the book?s characters and plot, while Combs worked to weave the franchising concepts into the story line. The creative process for their?graphic novels is quite simple.

?We think of a general plot that has ties to the content we want to cover and then create memorable characters,? Short said.??In this case, we built the book around the larger-than-life patriarch, Garc?n, who is a mixture of J. Peterman from Seinfeld and ?The Most Interesting Man in the World.??

Short said the actual writing of the book then becomes pretty easy since the material they cover ? business, management, entrepreneurship ? has so many applications to everyday life.

?Our basic idea is to build on the concept of storytelling and the concept that individuals learn and convey more information naturally through memorable stories,? Short said.

The book has received a favorable response since its release.

?We?ve received positive feedback from professors who have used the book in their classes,? Combs said. ?Their students have seemed to really enjoy it.?

However, Short said that they also wrote the book with other audiences in?mind ? namely, current practitioners and business owners.

?(For these audiences) most of the popular books on the subject seem to have ?idiots? or ?dummies? as their target market,? Short said. ?We felt we could do better by?offering a book with an engaging plot that builds off cutting-edge research. (With ?Tales of Garc?n?), we want to make the content engaging and entertaining while making it clear we aren?t dumbing down?the material.?

The book is available through Flat?World Knowledge, an online publishing?platform for textbooks. The first chapter?is viewable for free, and the remaining chapters are available in PDF for $20. Hard copies of the book are also available for?purchase on Amazon.

Combs said he plans to start using the book in his classroom. Combs is new to C&BA, having arrived from Florida State University.

?I came to the business school last fall, and it?s growing really fast,? Combs said. ?We?re really moving forward as a business school, adding a lot of programs, and it?s really exciting.?

Bears Not Attracted to Menstruating Women

Despite campfire fears dating back to at least 1967, black bears and grizzly bears are not attracted to the odors of menstruation, according to a recent Yellowstone National Park report.

Polar bears may be interested in the smell of menstrual blood, the report found, but bears that roam in North America are not. Food is a much more important temptation for bears, according to the findings.

The idea that bears might preferentially attack menstruating women is not new. In 1967, a night of infamous grizzly bear attacks in Glacier National Park in Montana left two women dead. One woman was having her period, and the other was carrying tampons.

The attacks led to speculation that the women's menstrual odors might have "triggered" the attacks. The Park Service and other agencies even began warning women that bears might be attracted to the smell of menstrual blood, despite no scientific evidence to back up those warnings.?

Since 1992, the Forest Services' Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee has tried to debunk this myth, but it has been difficult to dislodge. The new Yellowstone report, released in February, draws on a series of old studies to set the record straight. [7 Medical Myths Even Doctors Believe]

In one of these studies, conducted in 1991, researches exposed black bears, the most common kind of bear in the United States, to used tampons and to four menstruating women. They found no interest among any of the bears to the scents. Nor have researchers found any examples of black bears attacking menstruating women.

Nor are grizzly bears interested in women having their periods. A 1985 analysis of hundreds of grizzly bear attacks on humans found no evidence linking any of the attacks to menstruation ? including the infamous "Night of the Grizzlies" attacks in Glacier. The two bears involved in those attacks were what biologists called "food conditioned," according to "Backcountry Bear Basics: The Definitive Guide to Avoiding Unpleasant Encounters" (Mountaineers Books, 2006) by Dave Smith. These bears were used to eating garbage and had begun to associate humans with food.

The one exception to bears' disinterest in menstrual blood was the polar bear, the Yellowstone report finds. A 1983 study found that four captive polar bears exposed to a series of scents responded strongly only to seal smells and used tampons.

But as Smith points out in his book, the tests were limited to four bears and only 12 encounters with live, menstruating women. The bears were also much less interested in menstrual blood than any sort of food scent, eating used tampons half of the time they smelled them compared with 100 percent of the time for seafood and 92 percent of the time for seal oil. Even alcohol was more palatable to the polar bears than used tampons. They guzzled down beer 66 percent of the time. (They also ate unused tampons 13 percent of the time.)

At Yellowstone Park, the report concludes, there is no evidence of a link between bear attacks and menstruation. Nevertheless, the Park Service recommends using tampons instead of external pads and unscented menstrual products to keep potentially appealing odors down.? ?

Commercial Real Estate Advice That Puts You Bank Account At Ease

If purchasing commercial real estate is on your to-do list, then it is important that you have a plan as to what type you are planning to buy. Investing in the wrong real estate can cost you much money. Keep reading for tips to help you make informed decisions in your commercial investments.

You will need to have all of your financial information if you want to procure a commercial real estate loan. Not having your own financial statements in order will make a poor impression on the bank, possibly making them turn down your loan application.

Commercial real estate investors should remain conscious of the possibility of drastic inflation over the next few years. In the past, many leases had built-in clauses that made adjustments according to the Consumer Price Index, which protected signers from inflation. However, most leases today don?t contain mandatory adjustment clauses, so if there?s mass inflation, you may lose money.

TIP! Know what to expect from your realtor by asking them questions about successes and failures. Ask them how their results are measured.

When selling a property, you should make certain that whatever price you set is realistic. Many different factors can influence the real worth of your property.

Be mindful of the fact that all pieces of property have specific lifetimes. Ignoring a property or deciding to wait too long can cause this lifetime to come to an unexpected end, especially if you aren?t willing to pay the fees for proper upkeep over the period of time. It may need a more updated electrical system, or a new roof. Although every building needs maintenance and updating at some point, some need repairs and upgrades more often. Craft a long-term plan for handling repairs and maintenance.

Visit the commercial real estate properties that you are interested in. Definitely consider having a professional contractor go with you when looking at potential properties. Submit a first offer and solicit counteroffers. Before you choose, make sure you look over your offers a few times.

TIP! Always ensure that the areas around your property are well taken care of. You are responsible for cleaning up your building from environmental waste.

When choosing between two different types of commercial properties, it?s best to look at things on a bigger scale. Regardless of whether the property you decide on has twenty units or fifty, the process of obtaining financing will be the same, and in both cases will require substantial effort. By choosing a larger piece of commercial property, you will be getting a better rate per unit, giving you the best potential for success.

Borrowers are required to order the appraisal in commercial loans. The bank won?t accept it as valid. Order it yourself to ensure everything goes as planned.

TIP! Before choosing a real estate broker, you need to know how they negotiate. Know what sort of education and background they have.

As indicated by this article, commercial real estate investments can be lucrative. You will need to do some research, acquire new skills and spend enough time looking for the best deals. Of course, not everyone can succeed at commercial real estate investment, but following our tips will certainly increase your

When Does Eating Healthy Become Unhealthy? | Newswire

By Michelle Hamilton

Filling your grocery cart with organic vegetables and whole grains is a smart way to personally combat the nation?s obesity epidemic. Yet for some people, a dedication to eating ?right? can cross a line into a disorder called orthorexia.

Alternative medicine physician Steven Bratman, M.D., himself an orthorexia sufferer, coined the term in 1997 to refer to an extreme fixation on health food. Unlike anorexia, an eating disorder characterized by consuming too few calories, orthorexia is a preoccupation with the quality of food, rather than the quantity, and the condition can have severe mental and physical repercussions.

The disorder often begins with a real desire to improve health, says Maria Rago, Ph.D., vice president of the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD). People stop eating white flour or processed foods, and aim for organic produce and whole grains. Such healthy practices should be applauded, but when restrictions become so severe?cutting out fats or salt or food groups?you put yourself at risk for nutrient deficiencies or other problems.

The physical consequences of orthorexia are real, but what distinguishes the disorder from healthy eating is obsessive and compulsive behavior. ?How preoccupied someone is about eating the right thing, that?s the measure of orthorexia,? says Rago.

Orthorexics can spend hours planning and preparing meals, consuming a disproportionate amount of time and mental energy that might otherwise be directed at work or family. They may avoid going out to eat because they believe restaurant food is not ?pure.? Social events around food?an office party, potluck, or a post-run group breakfast, for example?can cause anxiety. Orthorexics may begin to withdraw socially, and experience depression and mood swings.

?If food is interfering with other parts of your life or causing anxiety, it?s a problem,? says Emily Slager, LMHC, assistant program director at Walden Behavioral Care in Waltham, Massachusetts, one of the nation?s leading eating-disorder centers.

Orthorexia is not a clinically recognized condition, so no statistics are available. But over the last few years, eating-disorder specialists have reported a rise in the condition. Some experts say it?s hard to pinpoint whether orthorexia is a growing problem, or if it appears more prevalent due to greater awareness. (There?s also debate on whether it is an eating disorder or a subset of obsessive-compulsive disorder.)

Slager, however, worries that orthorexia may be a bigger issue than we know. ?It flies under the radar because healthy eating is a good, acceptable thing,? she says.

?It can be perplexing to parents, partners, and coaches because it might seem as if the person is really just trying to take care of their health or eat to optimize performance,? says Cynthia Bulik, Ph.D., director of the University of North Carolina Eating Disorders Program.

One of the biggest fears among experts is that because orthorexia is a progressive disorder, it can be a step toward anorexia. Lindsay Calvario, a sports dietician at ANAD, has seen this pattern in a number of her patients, including a collegiate runner she?s currently counseling. The runner began to make healthy tweaks to her diet as her running intensified. But as she cut out foods she considered unhealthy, her condition spiraled into severe calorie restriction. Depression and a stress fracture followed, forcing her to eventually quit the team.

The runner?s situation is extreme, but it highlights the fact that culture plays a role in disordered eating. Athletes operate within groups that are very conscious of their bodies and their health, so they?re more predisposed to orthorexia, says Calvario. The same is true for any body-conscious community, from running clubs to professional dancers and models.

No one, of course, is immune societal pressures. Men can be orthorexic. You can be overweight and have the disorder, or eat plenty of calories (i.e. not at risk for anorexia) and still be orthorexic.

?Our country?s obsession with health and thinness, a fear of obesity, has brought a wider range of eating concerns to the forefront,? says Slager.

Nancy Clark, M.S, R.D., a prominent sports dietician and author of Nancy Clark?s Sports Nutrition Guidebook, sees this playing out in her practice. ?Some people think that if they have a piece of cake, they negate all the good stuff they put into their body,? she says.

She counsels that black-and-white thinking is counterproductive. ?You don?t have to have a perfect diet to have a good diet,? says Clark. ?If 90 percent is quality and 10 percent is whatever, that?s fine.?

At times, Clark may refer someone to a mental-health professional. ?I help people with the nutrition end, talk about balance and control and perfection,? she says. ?If they can take my information and use it, great. But it they can?t, then food is the symptom, not the problem.?
