LG Optimus 3D Max wages dual-core war in benchmark tests

LG Optimus 3D Max wages a dual-core war in benchmark tests
A mere day has passed since we stumbled upon initial benchmarks for the Optimus 4X HD, and now, yet another LG smartphone has tossed its hat into the arena. In the Optimus 3D Max's arsenal is a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, which is part of the TI OMAP 4430 SoC. Today, we pitted it against two dual-core contemporaries from HTC and Samsung -- namely, the One S and Galaxy S Blaze 4G. Sadly, the Optimus 3D Max failed to put up much of a resistance to either smartphone, and while its scores remain unofficial, its plainly obvious that this LG will look sorely dated upon its arrival. You can see how it all unfolded just after the break.

[Thanks, Konstantinos]

North Korea readies longer range rocket; Japan, South Korea wary

CHOLSAN, North Korea/SEOUL | Mon Apr 9, 2012 2:24pm EDT

CHOLSAN, North Korea/SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea has readied a rocket for a launch from a forested valley in its remote northwest this week that will showcase the reclusive state's ability to fire a missile with the capacity to hit the continental United States.

Pyongyang says the rocket, to be launched this week, will only carry a weather satellite, but South Korea and the United States say it is a test of a ballistic missile. And although the risk of it veering off course is low, guidance remains its weakest point.

In a rare move, reporters were taken to the new Sohae launch station, close to the border with China, where work was in progress to ready the 30-metre high Unha-3 rocket and its satellite.

The three-stage rocket was on the launch platform, indicating the launch will go ahead on plan between April 12-16.

"Supreme Commander Kim Jong-un made a very bold decision, that is why you are allowed to be this close to the launch site," site director Jang Myong Jin told visiting foreign journalists on Sunday.

North Korea announced plans to launch the satellite-bearing rocket to coincide with the 100th birthday celebrations of its founder, Kim Il-sung, a move that will help cement the prestige of his grandson Kim Jong-un, who took power in December.

The second stage booster is planned to separate in the seas to the west of the Philippines, about 3,000 km (1,860 miles) from the launch site, and experts say that represents the first possible landfall for the rocket if things go wrong.

If North Korea does achieve a successful separation of the third stage - something it says it achieved in 2009, but most experts say failed to put a previous satellite into orbit - that would show it had improved its technology and the capacity to produce a missile that could carry an intercontinental nuclear warhead.

Pyongyang has also shifted its launch site, and the new, more sophisticated site on the west of the Korean peninsula reduces the risk of debris falling on Japan, which was overflown in a previous test-launch of a missile.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This launch will take the rocket down the west coast of the Korean peninsula. Japan, which fears a repeat of a 2009 firing over its territory, has put its missile batteries on alert to shoot the rocket down.

"They have come pretty far on the question of range, but they still need a lot to resolve in the precision technology needed for (warhead) re-entry and guidance," a South Korean military official who spoke on condition of anonymity said.

The Unha-3 is likely the same three-stage liquid-fueled ballistic missile the North fired in 2009 over Japan which eventually splashed down after a 3,800 km flight, military experts in South Korea said.

The new rocket is believed to have a design range of more than 6,700 km (4,160 miles), and can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg.

At its closest point, Alaska in the United States is about 5,000 km from North Korea.

The launch will be the first at the Sohae rocket station, construction of which began in 2007. It is a large, sophisticated facility with specialized assembly and transport, according to analysis from military specialist consultancy IHS Jane's Defense Weekly.

LITTLE RISK

While most international observers doubt that the Unha-2 rocket launched in 2009 managed to put a satellite into orbit, few experts believe there is a high risk the Unha-3 will land on a densely populated urban area.

The biggest risks are a massive failure of the guidance system that could send the rocket north over China, the North's main political and economic backer, or the destruct mechanism not functioning if it does veer off course, said Markus Schiller from Schmucker Technologie in Munich, an expert on North Korean missile systems.

"There always is a residual risk, of course, that several things might go wrong and lead to unforeseen disaster ... but this risk is very low, actually approaching zero," Schiller said in an emailed response to questions.

"It is far more likely that the rocket itself fails and blows apart."

The launch site is located 50 km (30 miles) from North Korea's border with China.

"The worst case scenario is it strays into China or South Korea if the rocket goes out of control," said an expert on rocket technology at a South Korean state-run research institute, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.

While North Korea's 23 million people live in poverty and many are at risk of malnutrition, the prestige of developing rocket technology and nuclear weapons capacity is the most important issue for Pyongyang, which sees it as a deterrent against invasion.

The North is believed to have stockpiled enough fissile material to manufacture up to 10 nuclear bombs and South Korea's Yonhap news agency said on Sunday it was preparing for a third nuclear test.

Government officials in South Korea have calculated the North is spending $19 million on this launch.

"I believe North Korea is developing many technologies simultaneously - technologies on rocket that can deliver nuclear warheads, materials that can cope with high temperature when reentering the atmosphere and on the miniaturization of nuclear bombs," said the South Korean rocket expert.

Rangers spoil Ventura's managerial debut

By STEPHEN HAWKINS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:29 p.m. ET April 6, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Ian Kinsler and the two-time defending American League champion Texas Rangers certainly don't seem affected by their disappointments.

After being unable to reach a deal on a new long-term contract before his self-imposed deadline of opening day to end negotiations, Kinsler homered, had a double and scored twice for the Rangers in a season-opening 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

"You come in here and you play for your teammates, you don't play for yourself. This is a very selfless team," Kinsler said. "That's something outside the clubhouse. ... My main focus is to play hard for my teammates and do what I can to win a game."

Just more than five months after they twice came within one strike of a World Series championship before losing in seven games to St. Louis, the Rangers opened the new season on a picture-perfect day - 75 degrees under blue skies - and played the game exactly how manager Ron Washington prefers.

It is a familiar and successful script.

Colby Lewis (1-0) struck out nine in his first opening day start. Three relievers then worked scoreless innings, with new closer Joe Nathan working a perfect ninth.

And the offense manufactured the needed runs against White Sox starter John Danks (0-1).

"A well-played game," said Michael Young, the longest-tenured Ranger in his 12th season. "The first inning was perfect."

Kinsler had a leadoff double in the first for Texas, before a sacrifice bunt by Elvis Andrus and a sacrifice fly by Josh Hamilton. Kinsler's homer in the third made it 2-0.

After Chicago tied the game by scoring twice in the sixth, including Adam Dunn's record-tying eighth opening day homer, Hamilton led off the bottom of the frame with a single and scored on a single by Young.

The loss spoiled the managerial debut of Robin Ventura, who before the game had his first meeting with Nolan Ryan since charging the mound 19 seasons earlier against the Hall of Fame pitcher. Ryan is now president, CEO and part-owner of the Rangers.

"We just talked. I congratulated him on the last couple of years. He's done a great job," Ventura said.

Ventura, a surprise hire by the White Sox after Ozzie Guillen went to be Miami's manager, was a 26-year-old third baseman for the White Sox when he charged the mound against Ryan on a hot August night at old Arlington Stadium in 1993. Ryan, 20 years older and in the last year of his playing career, got Ventura in a headlock and landed several blows.

The two hadn't spoken until Ryan went to the White Sox clubhouse before the opener.

As for his first game as a manager, Ventura said, "I figured we'd lose a game at some point this year."

Lewis walked only one over six innings, throwing 70 of 100 pitches for strikes. The only other Rangers pitcher with nine strikeouts in a season opener was Ryan in 1991.

"Colby threw extremely well, and it was great to get Joe out there on opening day, get the first one of a big crowd, with a one-run lead," Young said. "We knew it we'd chip away and push one more run across, we'd have a chance to win."

Alexi Ogando, an All-Star and 13-game winner as a starter last season, is back in the bullpen and struck out all three batters in faced in the seventh after Texas regained the lead and Lewis left. Nathan, the former Minnesota Twins closer, got a strikeout in the ninth.

Dunn pulled a ball into the second deck of seats in right field to start the sixth. Frank Robinson and Ken Griffey Jr. are the only other major leaguers who have eight homers in openers.

"It would've been a lot sweeter if we'd pulled it out today and we could talk about the win instead of that," Dunn said. "When I stepped in, he was ready to go. Luckily I didn't have time to think. If I had, I probably would have done something bad."

Dunn batted third in the White Sox lineup. Last year, the highly paid slugger hit .159 with only 11 homers while striking out 177 times in 415 at-bats.

Alex Rios was hit by a pitch with two outs in the White Sox sixth, and the speedster was on the run when Alexi Ramirez singled to left. Rios scored to tie it at 2.

Danks' first opening day start came in the stadium he visited often growing up in Austin about three hours away and where he always expected to pitch an opener after being drafted ninth overall by Texas in 2003. But he was traded to Chicago in December 2006, and got a new $65 million, five-year contract from the White Sox this winter.

"This was a fun game, it really was," said Danks, who struck out six with no walks in six innings. "All in all, it was disappointing to get beat, but I feel like I'm where I need to be. That's a good lineup over there. ... If I can be this good or better, it should be a good year."

NOTES: It was the sixth time Dunn had homered in the first game of the season. He twice had two homers on opening day, in 2005 and 2007 while with Cincinnati. ... The 13 strikeouts by Texas pitchers were a record for opening day. The previous record was 11, in that 1991 opener when Ryan had nine.

Engineering researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute develop 'phantoms' to make medical imaging safer for overweight individuals

Troy, N.Y. Most medical imaging equipment is not designed with overweight and obese patients in mind. As a result, these individuals can be exposed to higher levels of radiation during routine X-ray and CT scans.

A new study from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the first to calculate exactly how much additional radiation obese patients receive from a CT scan. Research results show the internal organs of obese men receive 62 percent more radiation during a CT scan than those of normal weight men. For obese women, it was an increase of 59 percent.

New technology developed at Rensselaer by nuclear engineering expert X. George Xu could help solve this problem. Xu's research team created ultra-realistic 3-D computer models of overweight and obese men and women, and used computer simulations to determine how X-rays interact with the different body types. These models, known as "phantoms," can help empower physicians to configure and optimize CT scanning devices in such a way that minimizes how much radiation a patient receives.

"Radiation exposure is cumulative over a patient's lifetime. The risk associated with a radiation dose from a single CT scan is relatively small when compared with the clinical benefit of the procedure. But patients are increasingly undergoing multiple CT scans and other radiation-based procedures, which can lead to unnecessary radiation risk. Regretfully, our study shows that obese and overweight patients can be exposed to an even greater level of radiation," said Xu, head of the Nuclear Engineering Program and a professor in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering (MANE) at Rensselaer. "Our new study brings us one step closer to minimizing radiation exposure and mitigating this risk to patients."

Results of the Xu's study were published today in the journal Physics in Medicine & Biology. The study may be viewed online at: http://m.iopscience.iop.org/0031-9155/57/9/2441

Currently, if technicians use normal equipment settings to perform a CT scan on an obese patient, the resulting images are blurry as the X-ray photons have to travel further and make their way through layers of fat. As a result, technicians generally adjust the equipment to a more powerful setting, which produces a better image but exposes the obese patient to additional radiation. There is no mechanism for discerning the setting levels that will provide an optimal balance of the highest image clarity and the lowest radiation dose.

These new phantoms for overweight and obese patients will be part of a forthcoming software package, VirtualDose, developed by Xu and his team. VirtualDose aims to enable the creation of a personalized, ultra-realistic phantom of any patient undergoing a CT scan. The program takes into consideration a patient's individual characteristics, including age, sex, height, weight, and even if a woman is pregnant. By entering these data into the software, VirtualDose quickly creates a phantom that accurately models the patient's internal organs. These phantoms will allow physicians and researchers to compare the radiation doses a patient will get from different CT scanner settings, and then choose the most appropriate configuration.

VirtualDose will also enable physicians to keep a highly accurate record of how much radiation patients are exposed to over their lifetime. California recently became the first state in the United States to require radiation dose records for patients undergoing CT examinations.

###

Along with Xu, authors of the study are research associate Aiping Ding; graduate students Matthew Mille and Tianyu Liu; and lecturer and campus radiation safety officer Peter Caracappa, all of the Nuclear Engineering Program and MANE at Rensselaer.

The research is funded primarily by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with additional support from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy's Nuclear Energy University Programs (NEUP), and the Health Physics Society.

The Nuclear Engineering Program at Rensselaer is among the oldest in the nation, dating back to the late 1950s when the university built an electron accelerator.

What If Love Is Only Approximately Equal To Love? Object?m ...

by Richard Gadsden

Early this month, a British morning show did an interview with Amanda, a young woman who had recently ended a 10-year relationship with a drum kit and was now in a long-distance relationship with the Statue of Liberty. I found out about the story?as well as the sexual orientation it represented, object?m-sexuality?from a Jezebel post. The brief post wittily wrapped the story up as??a non-traditional twist on a very common story: High school girl falls in love with drummer because she likes his shape and recklessness, comes to her senses and ends up in a relationship with a solid woman.? I?thought the whole thing sounded pretty funny, so I watched the video. And I had some thoughts.

My first impression was intense shock at the poise of the hosts. Maybe things are different across the pond, but the first thing I expect when I hear ?talk show? and ?anything even remotely outside normative behavior? is: cringe-worthy disrespect. So the fact that the hosts were able to introduce Amanda?s relationship with the drum kit without any jokes about beating or tapping was astounding to me.

The interview started with Amanda explaining that she was attracted to objects based on their different geometrical shapes. As far as the drum kit went, she didn?t anthropomorphize or name it. She did take it to bed, but, she said, ?I just like to cuddle? and the drum was ?just like a teddy bear.?

The Statue of Liberty was different. Amanda did think of the statue as feminine, even nicknaming it Libby. And her attraction seemed to go beyond the geometric. Of her feelings for Lady Liberty, Amanda said, ?I just love the way that she looks and I love what she stands for. I love her history. I love everything about her!?

Overall, I found the segment a surprisingly balanced look at a type of non-normative sexuality that I, personally, had never heard of. Even the psychiatrist seemed hesitant to pathologize object?m-sexuality. The first thing she said was ?It?s not really a medical condition, it?s an orientation.? But what stood out to me the most about this segment was how resistant Amanda?s experience seemed from normative ideas about love and sex. To clarify, I don?t mean that Amanda herself resisted norms. What I mean is that it seemed nearly impossible to talk about Amanda?s sexuality in the ways we usually talk about sexuality.

The interviewers, as polite as they were, clearly struggled to translate Amanda?s sexual experience in a way that would make it correlate to normative sexuality. When Amanda talked about how she fell in love with the geometric shape of the drum kit, a host tried to compare that to liking the feel of an ergonomically designed phone. Upon hearing how the drum kit (unsurprisingly) didn?t ?do? anything to make Amanda fall out of love for it, but it was Liberty?s appearance that caused her emotional change, they joked about Amanda?s ?unfaithfulness.? When Amanda talked about how she?d like to watch the sunset with the Statue of Liberty, a host mentioned how difficult this would be due to the statue?s size. ?You can only get so close,? he said, putting his arm around a hypothetical companion.

At one point, an interviewer asked Amanda if her relationship with the Statue of Liberty included a sexual element. Amanda responded, ?There is an intimate attraction to her but that is only a very small part. A lot of the part is how she makes me feel and what she?s done for me. She reciprocates to me. She doesn?t put her hands around me but she makes me feel really good inside.?

The hosts? questions and comments were all geared at comparing Amanda?s experiences to what seemed to be the two closest things: aesthetic appreciation for an object, and a sexual relationship with another human. But neither of these possible comparisons can ever really work. What Amanda felt for the drum kit and the Statue of Liberty was a combination of those feelings, or something else entirely.

I was particularly struck by the way the word ?love? was used to refer to all these different feelings. We use it foe different feelings all the time, of course. You can ?love? a meal, a sexual partner, a parent, a friend, a location, a pet, and a variety of other things without ever confusing your feelings for one with your feelings for another. But the expansiveness of the word becomes really apparent with Amanda, who ?loves? inanimate objects the same way I might ?love? persons ? except not, because my crushes aren?t geometrically based. Though, I guess, that could correlate to attractiveness. Except, that?s not right, because I usually want to do more than cuddle with the person I?m in love with? So maybe it?s sort of like asexuality? Although, didn?t she say there was something like sexual attraction?

You can see how easily it gets messy. We use terms like ?love? and ?sexuality? to refer to things that can sometimes be completely incomparable. It?s confusing, but I wouldn?t say it?s a bad thing. Frankly, some things should be confusing. What?s more problematic, I think, is acting as though things are the same because they?ve been given the same name.

The ?we?re just like you? argument has been extremely popular in LGBT rights movements and has also come under heavy criticism by some queer thinkers. While I believe the argument can be useful, I don?t think it?s the best one for creating real social change. When same-sex marriage happens, for example, it will never be opposite-sex marriage, for the basic reason that it is between two people of the same sex. By the same token, granting Black Americans citizenship did not make them the same as White Americans. Even after generations of civil rights advances on the race front, recent tragedies like that of Trayvon Martin are clear examples of differential treatment. I believe that what we really need is for the differences between social groups and experiences to be recognized but dealt with in fairness rather than discrimination.

A woman being in love with a fence is not the same as a man being in love with a man. Neither of those is the same as a girl being in love with a boy. None of those is the same as a third-gender person being in love with two men and a woman.

And that should be OK. The fact that the relationships are different doesn?t mean that any should be privileged above the others. But, being different, each relationship will have different needs and follow a different course. And some elements of one relationship may be totally alien to elements of another.

What if, instead of separate but equal, we worked on together but different?

Just a thought.

What do you think? Is the girl in love with the drum kit just crazy? Are all kinds of love really the same? Or should we give up on the shared terminology entirely? Let us know in the comments!

Flood Cars Business Services

There are hundreds of thousands of cars, trucks, classic cars, motorcycles and other types of vehicles that have moderate to severe flood damage, and many thousands more will be damaged this year, make sure you are prepared to be able to ferret this cars out before one winds up in your driveway.

Before buying get a suspected car,get a good pre inspection on the car or if a Classic Car etc. get a proper Classic Car Appraisal, then you will be armed to go to your insurance agent and get properly insured.

Some of these vehicles that have not been completely submerged will be cleaned up, freshner sprayed into carpets and vents and shipped North, East and West. These are the cars that will need expert Inspections and Appraisals, as they will be harder to detect.

The Dealers who deal in these vehicles get them dirt cheap and do some clean up and then ship them out to the unsuspecting public. These vehicles will look normal but after buying one of them you will most likely develop serious problems down the road. And this could be avoided if you have an expert Automotive Appraiser and or Inspector check it out for you.

These vehicles will have mold started that you won?t be able to detect for some time and the odor will be covered up with some strong sprays that will hide the problem for several weeks/months. But then one warm day after being closed up in the sun you will open the door to a musty odor that will start to become worse each day until after a while it will be unbearable. And this type of odor is very hard to cover up for any length of time.

The odor may be the least of your problems for after a vehicle is submerged in water for any length of time the water and grit is in the engine, transmission, differential all the wheel bearings and working parts. So after driving the vehicle a few hundred miles you will start to develop major failures to these components.

Also the water will get into the electrical system of the vehicle and cause shorts in the wiring that may cause fires or serious damage to the computer system of the vehicle that will result in very high repair bills.

To avoid buying any of these vehicles you will need to have a complete inspection by an Automotive Inspection professional, to inspect or Appraise the vehicle for any tell tale signs of water damage. If you can?t do this yourself hire a good mechanic to check it for you, or use a vehicle inspection service, like CarFacts, to determine if it has been in a flood or any type of accident or had major repairs.

Check title for previous owners and if it trails back to recent sales in the Hurricane/flood states pass up the sale even it seems to be a good deal as you may have some high repair bills later or worse, not even be able to salvage vehicle.

I know several people that had Classic Cars, Vintage Cars, Street Rods and high dollar Motorcycles that got severely damaged or destroyed only to find out their insurance coverage did not come close to covering the replacement cost of their vehicles. If only they would have had a proper Appraisal on their vehicles that could have all been avoided and their vehicle would have been covered for the proper amount.

Don?t let that happen to you. It dosn?t have to be a severe storm that damages your vehicle, it could be damaged by a fire, an accident or numerous other things, so check out the proper way to have your vehical Appraised at Carfacts Appraisal information.

Walking Around: Home Improvement...

I'm on a mission to find inspiration lately. We have a few projects on the home front that need to kick-off this year.?

#1. Paint the ugly yellow hallway to a beautiful shade of blue dusk?(courtesy of Restoration Hardware)
#2. Re-do bedroom closets (thanks to elfa at the Container Store)
#3. Get picture framed for bf's office (courtesy of April Sevens in Chicago)
#4. New bedding...this has been a struggle for me, I had my eye on a few different patterns - where I am typically challenged is deciding a color palette for the room. The walls are beige - it's probably going to stay that way, do I keep it neutral??
#5. The Fireplace. This will be one of the most fun projects - taking down wall cabinets (that I have NEVER been fond of) painting the walls a lighter color, incorporating reclaimed wood and built in shelving including a bar and wine fridge. And most importantly, getting the fireplace to a better working condition without smelling like gas.?
#6. Shades. There are heavy curtains in the living room right now that just block out the west facing natural light that always produces beautiful shades of pink and orange at sunset. We would love to get automatic shades that we can control when the sun is too bright and creates a glare on the tv.?

#7. Picture Wall. I have been wanting to do this in every apartment I've ever lived. We have some great photos but I'm also planning on combing the web for unique prints, black and white photography. I think adding dimension with Vintage letters, and antlers would be fun;)

#8. Patterns. Everything is a bit flat with solids right now - with the exception of my cowhide rug and zebra chair. I think it would be so nice to layer in patters, bold colors and accessorize.

The...if we win the lottery wishlist:
#9. The Kitchen would be amazing with painted cabinets, lighter colored marble, stainless steal appliances. It's a loft style apartment with high ceilings and the kitchen flows into the living room - so the lighter colors would really make it feel larger.
#10. Master Bathroom re-haul. Tile, rain shower faucet, the works!

Scientist at Work Blog: Learning on the Road to Nowhere in Madagascar

Brian L. Fisher, an entomologist at the California Academy of Sciences, has been studying the ants of Madagascar for more than 15 years.

The plan sounded so simple. We would drive from this capital city to Kandreho and then boat down the Mahahavy River until we reached one of the last remaining large forests in northwestern Madagascar. We would carry all our food and gear, including a full lab with a microscope, to a beach camp adjacent to the forest itself.

But if someone had told me that we would be the first vehicle known to make it through this dirt track during peak rainy season, or that Cyclone Irina was gathering steam offshore and would deluge our travel path in two days, I would never have left Antananarivo.

Our destination was Kasijy, the region?s last standing pristine forest. It?s a rugged, canyon-filled landscape resting on high blocks of limestone and sedimentary rock. We would be the first entomologists to reach Kasijy.

Shortly after turning onto the dirt road to Kandreho, we met our first large river, the Ikopa. The water was high, swollen from three recent cyclones. How would we get across? Lengthy negotiations with nearby residents turned up three metal boats. We hooked them together, drove our Land Cruiser on top, and had our makeshift barge towed across.

The following day brought two more big rivers, lots of mud and deteriorating weather. I always say that you should never leave home without a winch in Madagascar. But my planning failed to save us: On our second day out, our brand-new winch seized up in midturn.

Moving forward was going to require a new approach ? an almost complete reliance on local people for what we called vehicle recovery. Every time we encountered an obstacle, I had to calculate how many helpers we would need, and then set out to find a nearby village. Though it was a pleasure to be working with the Malagasy in this way, at times I felt we had become a microdevelopment project, putting money in the hands of villagers.

When we finally reached Kandreho, we believed our troubles were behind us. But the one boat large enough to carry our gear had been lost downstream the night before.

The only option left was a large boat owned by the community. For that we needed agreement from the community?s seven elders. After about six hours of tracking down and meeting with each elder, all agreed to lend us the boat.

We were in the middle of loading our supplies the next morning when we learned that the community had overruled the elders. On edge because of the cyclone, the people felt that every boat was needed to carry them to their rice fields. That was when we realized we were not going to Kasijy, and it was time to head back to the capital. This was the first time in expeditions to more than 250 sites in Madagascar that we failed to reached a forest to collect ants.

We left Kandreho thinking that by now the road would be easier to drive. But one thing about a cyclone is that the water just keeps coming.

For five days we traveled from 5 a.m. until 8 p.m. and camped near villages ? or wherever the car got stuck. We sometimes kept moving long after dark to get to higher ground. If the water suddenly started rising, we could be trapped for days.

The long days, missing meals and stress started to take a toll, especially on our feet. Barefoot was the only way to cope with the mud, but we all noticed brown punctures splotching our feet. The villagers said this was a common condition, a consequence of acidic soils.

We returned to the capital in time to start teaching our course on ants for university students. And I am more determined than ever to find a way into Kasijy ? only next time we intend to get there by boat from the north, bypassing the unforgettable road to Kandreho.

Winners crowned in WrestleMania Reading Challenge World Finals

MIAMI ? Before the lights in Sun Life Stadium blaze to life for WrestleMania XXVIII, a completely different showdown took place in the nearby Miami-Dade Public Library. Middle and high schoolers from all over the US and Canada squared off in the seventh annual WrestleMania Reading Challenge World Finals, vying for ringside seats at The Show of Shows (PHOTOS, VIDEO). The previous night, the finalists had the opportunity to meet bestselling author Mick Foley and former WWE Divas Champion Kelly Kelly. (PHOTOS, STORY)

After outlasting the other readers in their respective areas, 20 finalists traveled to Miami to compete in the Challenge. Before the competition, fans also enjoyed an exclusive meet and greet with WWE Superstars Dolph Ziggler, Rey Mysterio, Hornswoggle, Alicia Fox and Mick Foley. One competitor was so overwhelmed to meet Fox, she burst into tears of joy. "It?s very humbling," said Fox. "I love being able to come here and talk to these kids. I?m honored to be a part of it."

Presided over by Mick Foley, the competition was as furious and heated as a WrestleMania main event, with the finalists from three different grade groups being posed questions by Rey Mysterio and Dolph Ziggler on Mike Lupica?s Underdogs (grades 5-6), After Tupac and D Foster by Jacqueline Woodson (grades 7-8) and Paul Volponi?s Riker?s High (grades 9-12).

After a series of 20 trivia questions, the regional finalists in each grade category who correctly answered the most questions about his or her group?s respective book were named World Champions and presented with ringside seats to WrestleMania XXVII! "Ringside seats!" enthused Ziggler. "I?ve not sat ringside for anything, ever. And I?ve been to two Britney Spears concerts this year. There are 79,999 people behind you! I?ll be seeing these kids? faces when I?m winning the match for Team Johnny."

Nicole Jones, who claimed the top prize for the grade 7-8 category, was thrilled with her victory and noted that she trained for the finals as hard as John Cena is no doubt training for tomorrow?s battle against The Rock. "I read the book five times," she said. "So I was pretty confident, but I knew there were a lot of people who knew it too."

Traveling all the way from Denver, Colorado, grade 9-12 winner Jesus Reyes came from behind to win it all in a classic WrestleMania-style ending. "I was a little nervous," he confessed, "because the person sitting next to me was ahead of me at one time. And with the last question, I knew one part of the question for sure, but one the second part I wasn?t so sure, but I got it."

And, it wouldn?t be a WrestleMania Week event without a title defense. Grade 5-6 competitor Chase Leclair won last year?s challenge in Atlanta and returned this year to take home the silver cup!

The event is a special one for both the Superstars and the WWE Universe, continuing WWE?s trend of being a leader in promoting literacy for today?s kids, and even uniting Superstars who might ordinarily be at opposite sides of the ring. "You see us in the ring, and we?re wrestling against each other,? said Rey, ?but when it comes time to motivate our youth, then we come together."

The WrestleMania Reading Challenge encourages tweens and teens to read not only during Teen Read Week but each and every day beyond. Who knew that reading a book could lead to a trip to The Shows of Shows on The Grandest Stage of Them All? Now that?s a story with a happy ending.
