"There is a huge opportunity here for banks to take a brave pill and come out and say ?look, we've lost our way, we know we've done damage and we're determined to put it right'," Beattie said, adding Goldman should be the one to take the lead.

So far banks have shied away from a proactive approach. Some fear it could reinforce public antagonism, one senior UK bank executive said, because it would amount to a recognition of past failing - something many bankers do not accept.

"They think ?I'm not responsible' (for the crisis) and it may be that individually, or that their banks aren't, but they are not recognizing that the public can't tell the difference, and the politicians won't," the banker said, on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the subject.

Such is the depth of mistrust, however, that even the best PR is seen as unlikely to silence critics. Public anger stems chiefly from the taxpayer-backed bailouts of 2008. People say they are looking for signs the industry is actually changing its ways, and not just getting better at trumpeting its good deeds.

Bankers contacted by Reuters, who asked to remain anonymous, also recognized action - whether on pay, lending or contributing higher taxes - was in the long term the only answer.

Several said positive news - whether it was their backing for new apprentice schemes or new programs for small and medium-sized enterprises - was met with cynicism by the media or not reported at all. Criticism from politicians has been relentless, and many in the industry feel, unwarranted.

At this week's TED conference, the big?winner was?a concept, not a person: The City 2.0, a crowdsourcing clearinghouse that's backed by the Knight Foundation. The City 2.0 is designed to enable citizens to propose ideas to upgrade their own cities, and put them in touch with the resources that can turn those ideas into realities. The TED Prize was announced last December, but details about how the $100,000 in prize money were laid out for the first time during this week's conference. This June, the money will be awarded in $10,000 chunks to the 10 local projects that are judged "most likely to spur the creation of their City 2.0."

I guess not much has changed in the land of actively managed funds over the last several years.

Fast-forward to last year, and TIME Magazine reports, ?Among large-cap fund managers, 79% trailed the return of the S&P 500.?

Yet this is only the beginning? In 2011, TIME adds, ?57% of global funds, 65% of international funds, and 81% of emerging market funds trailed their benchmarks.?

You?d think investors would get tired of paying excessive fees for funds managed by experts who, more than half the time, don?t even beat the market they?re looking to in any given year.

Well, although the majority of investors still invest in actively managed funds today, it appears more and more are switching to passively managed index funds in the hopes of better returns.

Index Funds At a Glance

Index funds are simply investments that try to replicate the index of a specific market.

Unlike actively managed funds, index funds are passively managed. That means instead of having a fund manager choose which stocks are likely to head higher in any given index, an index fund would simply own all of the stocks in the index.

At the end of the year, this allows index funds to charge less in fees as opposed to actively managed funds. And it minimizes the taxes investors would incur had they gone with an actively managed fund.

There are two ways to invest in index funds, through a mutual fund or an ETF.

The Vanguard 500 Index Fund (Nasdaq: VFINX) is an example of an index mutual fund that seeks to track the performance of the S&P 500.

Over the past five years, and as you?d hope, this fund?s chart looks strikingly similar to the S&P 500.

Yet, digging even deeper, traditional index funds like the Vanguard 500 Index may also have a major flaw?

They are cap weighted.

This means the companies with the biggest market caps in the indices they track make up the majority of the fund. Put simply, these funds invest in companies based on Wall Street ?popularity,? not necessarily based on their fundamentals.

As Reuters recently reported, ?Cap weighting tends to load up on the most expensive companies and shuns the big companies trading at deep discounts.?

So, what can you do?

The answer may lie in alternative index funds.

Alternative Index Funds

There are two alternative index funds to consider that can increase return with less volatility than their traditional cousin?

• Equal-weighted index fund
• Fundamental index fund

Equal-weighted index funds simply invest the same percentage into each of the stocks in it the index it?s tracking. An example of this is the Rydex S&P Equal Weight (NYSE: RSP), which was the first ETF to use equal weighting.

This index fund holds all the stocks that you?d see in a traditional S&P 500 index fund. But instead of making the S&P a ?popularity contest,? it simply allocates 0.2% of the portfolio to each company in the S&P 500.

On the other hand, index funds weighted by their fundamentals, like the Powershares FTSE RAFI US 100 (NYSE: PRF), weights its index based on a company?s book value, free cash flow, revenue and dividends.

Both of these alternatives funds are technically passively managed, so they won?t cost as much as an actively managed ETF or mutual fund. But you?ll probably pay higher annual fees than simply investing in a traditional index fund. This is simply because fundamental and equal weight index funds require more maintenance throughout the year to maintain.

But at the end of the day, these alternative index funds also give you the opportunity to increase your returns with less volatility than a traditional index fund.

When asked if the congressman would recuse himself from funding decisions for the Justice Department, Fattah?s chief of staff, Maisha Leek, said, ?Absent an allegation we will await the conclusion of the investigation.?

The raids are an outgrowth of the fraud conviction of Mikel Jones, a Philadelphia lawyer and former aide to Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), who has been a friend of the elder Fattah since they were children. In January 2011, Jones told two FBI agents that he had hired 259 Strategies and another company run by Fattah Jr. for consulting, according to the agents? report of the conversation.

Jones, who had extensive credit problems, told investigators that Fattah Jr. helped him obtain an American Express card by ?writing the CEO of the company and calling repeatedly until AMEX agreed to open the account.? The Value of Professional Networking

Professional networking is a skill that will help you to advance your career by building professional relationships. It is more than just passing out your business cards, it is a carefully formulated series actions that establishes strong professional relationships. When professional networking, it is important to remember that networking is a two-way street and it is not always about what the other person can do for you. Helping your professional contacts now can pay huge dividends down the road. Networking is valuable for exchanging information with other industry professionals and can often help you to advance your career.

Over 80% of open positions in companies are unadvertised, and are filled through employee referrals and recommendations. Without professional networking you will never even hear about these positions. Oftentimes, these are the more desirable positions that jobseekers are searching for. Professional networking helps you to break into this hidden job market and find these unadvertised positions. This hidden job market is particularly hard for recent graduates to break into, and this makes professional networking even more critical for them.

When applying for a job, having a recommendation from a current employee can have a significant positive impact on your chances of being hired. Having a contact within a prospective employers business provides you with a very strong and reliable reference. This reference helps to remove doubt in a hiring managers mind, and can be the difference between being hired and turned down.

Professional networking also helps you to hone your interviewing skills. Every time you meet a new contact it is like a mini interview, and the more of these you do, the more comfortable you will become. You encounter many of the same questions when you are professional networking, as you would during an interview. This repetition will lead to more confidence in an interview and a much smoother delivery.

While some professionals may feel like they do not need networking, they may be underestimating its value. You never know what kind of competitive advantage a contact could give your business, and sometimes these contacts can serve as third-party references when submitting proposals or handling conflicts.
